Een hoge snelheids roterende (lucht) stroom wordt gevestigd binnen een cilindrische of kegelcontainer genoemd een cycloon. Luchtstromen in een spiraalvormig patroon die, die bij de bovenkant (breed eind) beginnen van de cycloon en op het bodem (smalle) beëindigen eind alvorens de cycloon in een rechte stroom door het centrum van de cycloon en uit de bovenkant weg te gaan. De grotere (dichtere) deeltjes in de roterende stroom hebben teveel inertie om de strakke kromme van de stroom te volgen en de buitenmuur te slaan, die dan aan de bodem van de cycloon vallen waar zij kunnen worden verwijderd. In een kegelsysteem, als roterende stroombewegingen tegen het smalle eind van de cycloon wordt de rotatiestraal van de stroom verminderd, scheidend kleinere en kleinere deeltjes.
